The ADHD Handicap And Kids ADHD


ADHD is not a new phenomenom although it certainly seems so. This is because it is a condition that has always existed but has only recently officially be named and classified. What is ADHD then? ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, it can also take other related names like ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder). It is estimated that up to 20 million Americans suffer from ADHD. ADHD is often associated with the image of an uncontrollable child, causing havoc wherever he goes. While that can be true in some cases, ADHD cases are often not that extreme and dramatic.

It has been suggested that the brain of people with ADHD is wired differently to thoseof non ADHD sufferers. While this is still debated in the scientific community, the theory would be that the brain of ADHD people would have trouble to cope with repetitive tasks. In essence, their brains need to be constantly stimulated which leads to a lack of focus because a lot of day to day task, necessary as they may be, are routine and uneventful and thus are causing ADHD people to switch off. To be a true a ADHD sufferer you have to have all the symptoms of ADHD and not just one. That is to say you have to suffer from a lack of attention and be hyperactive.

There are many symptoms and common behaviors associated with the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder like lack or inability to focus, daydreaming, fidgeting, restlessness, impulsivity, lack of planning, etc.

It is fair to say that ADHD children and school don't mix well together. The very nature of school where children are asked to be quiet, keep to themselves and generally be attentive go against many of the behaviors of children with ADHD. Kids with ADHD can thus have a hard time in school because they are seen as troublemakers and not serious because of their lack of focus which is often perceived by the teacher as a lack of efforts.

There are two schools of thought when it comes to treatment for ADHD. Some people think drugs are not needed and advocate treating ADHD with natural remedies while others advocate the use of drugs to keep ADHD symptoms under control. It is the belief of this writer that ADHD drugs are superficial and in many instances counter productive. Often times ADHD drugs lead to dependency and do not treat ADHD in any significant way. The search for an ADHD cure is a bit of a wild goose chase really. ADHD in this writer's opinion can not be cured as such. What can be done is ease the symptoms and learn to live with and even embrace ADHD. ADHD sufferers are often bright people and many illustrious figures are thought to have been suffering from ADHD, like Thomas Edison for example.

There are many natural cures that are thought to help releave ADHD symptoms, a quick online search will reveal many of them, we will not talk about them here, it being beyond the scope of this article. Just know that they are out there and are an attractive alternative to medical drugs for treating Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
