Facts About Normal Wood Pellets And Premium Pellets

Climate change is making more of an impact on our choices of energy, and how they will affect the climate. Current climate change issues have been caused through the use of fossil fuels, which include oil, gas and coal. These forms of energy contain carbon, which has been trapped underground, and is not part of the current carbon cycle, which is represented by the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. By burning fossil fuels, the carbon from the fuels in released into the atmosphere, fossil fuels release additional carbon dioxide into the atmosphere during combustion, contributing to existing carbon dioxide levels, and increasing global warming.

To reduce the current effects of global warming using fossil fuels, new energy sources must be utilized that do either not contribute to the carbon cycle or are carbon neutral. Wind and solar energy for example are not part of the carbon cycle; they do not produce carbon and are therefore a low carbon technology. Plant material which can be used as a fuel is referred to as biomass. As plants and biomass use carbon dioxide to grow they are part of the carbon cycle, and more importantly are carbon neutral and do not contribute to global warming. One of the most popular forms of biomass energy is wood pellets, the most popular form of wood pellets are premium wood pellets.

Many different biomass materials including wood can be compressed into pellets for fuel. However not all biomass fuel pellets burn the same, some create more heat than other and more maintenance. For example the quantities of ash produced varies depending on the type of biomass used. Premium wood pellets use softwoods and hardwoods with bark removed to keep the ash content as low as possible. To produce the most efficient burn possible with pellets, the moisture content of the pellets must also be very low. Premium wood pellets also have a very high density. This high density along with the low ash content and moisture mean premium wood pellets produces the best heat with the lowest levels of maintenance. These features mean premium wood pellets are ideal for indoor small heating systems such as pellet stoves.

However it must be remembered there is only a limited amount of resources to produce premium wood pellets. In the future other types of biomass pellets need to be used. However as many biomass pellets generate more ash and other maintenance and cleaning issues, they are more suitable for use in a pellet boiler in a garage or outbuilding. Another issue with biomass pellets made from materials other than wood is corrosion. The general rule is, the greener something is, the more corrosive it will be. A good example of very corrosive pellets, are lawn grass pellets.
